Golden Rules of Thumb

  1. Work Place - A covered place with calm environment (not windy) and good brightness.
  2. Turn away from car when spraying product to cloth or sponge. This is to avoid excess droplets of the product stay on the car paint unintentionally.
  3. Do small partial area (around ¼ m2) every time for better control. Make sure application areas are overlapped.
  4. Follow this Order System - Top-Down then Anti-Clockwise, ie: Start with Rooftop -> Bonnet -> Left Door (Front) -> Left Door (Rear) -> Back -> Right Door (Rear) -> Right Door (Front).

The 5 Main Processes Involved in Coating are,

Assess > Prepare > Sealing Step 1 (BaseCoat) > Sealing Step 2 (GlossCoat) > Final Inspection

A. ASSESS

This step is to check and assess the paint condition and decide which level of cleaning or polishing work is required. Paint defects such as swirls, scratches, holograms, watermarks, dullness are common on used cars. For Brand New Cars, paint defects are usually minor and less.

Professional Detailers will usually have a set of system and procedures to do this assessment. So I am going to skip the details on this.

For DIY-ers, here are the basic checkings you can do,

  1. Thoroughly wash the car with car wash shampoo (SONAX Gloss Shampoo) and dry it completely.
  2. Prepare a dampen microfibre cloth, pick especially flat surfaces ie bonnet, roof top, trunk cover etc).
  3. Use the dampen cloth to wipe a small area and quickly look from diagonal angle for any trace of watermarks or holograms etc. Do this step under good brightness. Repeat at any areas you want to check.

For a more detailed checking, try spraying some Paint Prepare to the surface and wipe off. This will remove any waxes or filler or covering and reveal the true condition of paint.

B. PREPARE

Clean paintwork thoroughly and do polishing work if necessary.

  • For Brand New Car or Car Paint with very minor issues, you can use Sonax Xtreme Spray Polish to clean the paint. Xtreme Spray Polish can either be used manually or with machine.
  • For Used Car, usually paint correction job with machine is recommended. Look for professional detailing service to assist if you donot have professional skills or knowledge in this.
  • For Repainted Car, it's advised to wait 3 months before any polishing job is performed.

After the necessary paint cleaning/correction job,

Products: Paint Prepare, a piece of clean microfibre cloth (label it P1)

Steps:

  1. Wear the provided gloves.
  2. Shake Paint Prepare, Spray it to the P1 cloth. Wipe the car paint to remove any oil or wax or filler. Repeat this to the whole car following the Golden Rules of Thumb #3 and #4 above.

C. SEALING STEP 1 (BASECOAT)

Products: BaseCoat, a new coating sponge, 2 pieces of new microfibre cloth (label them B1 and B2).

Remember Golden Rules of Thumb #3 and #4 above.

Steps:

  1. Shake BaseCoat and spray thinly to the bright side of the coating sponge.
  2. Working crosswise, apply extensively and thinly to a small partial area (around ¼ m2) then wipe off with B1 cloth to a streak-free finish. Wipe again with B2 cloth.
  3. To apply second layer of BaseCoat, repeat Step 1 and 2 to the same area.
  4. Repeat Step 1 to 3 until the whole car is complete.
  5. Check for any areas that might look hazy (look from diagonal angle under sufficient brightness). Haziness means the excess coating product has not been completely wiped off. Just wipe if off again with B2 cloth.
  6. Once BaseCoat is done, wait 1 hour for the BaseCoat to harden before proceeding to apply GlossCoat. During this time, avoid contact with water or touches (fingers).

D. SEALING STEP 2 (GLOSSCOAT)

Products: GlossCoat, a new coating sponge, 2 pieces of new microfibre cloth (label them G1 and G2).

Again, remember Golden Rules of Thumb #3 and #4 above.

Steps:

  1. Shake GlossCoat and apply a few drops on the bright side of the coating sponge.
  2. Working crosswise, apply thinly to a small partial area (around ¼ m2) of the paintwork then wipe it off with G1 cloth to a streak-free finish. Wipe again with G2 cloth.
  3. To apply second layer of GlossCoat, repeat Step 1 and 2 to the same area,
  4. Repeat Step 1 to 3 until the whole car is complete.
  5. Check for any areas that might look hazy (look from diagonal angle under sufficient brightness). Hazy means the coating residue has not been completely wiped off. Just wipe if off again with G2 cloth.

E. FINAL INSPECTION

Do this under sufficient brightness. Check the whole car carefully and thoroughly for any sight of haziness or patches. Wipe off clean with G2 cloth if you find any.

Once everything is completed, allow 4 hours  for the GlossCoat to harden. During this time, avoid contact with water and touches (fingers etc.)

Ta-dang, that's it! Happy Coating!
